Clothing: Style and dressing everyone, what works best and what to avoid...

One of the main questions I get asked, is what do we wear! Ive put together some key tips and points to help you create a style that is uniquely you and will look amazing for your gallery.

  1. Dress yourself FIRST! Generally the person reading this is the main organiser and will decide on what everyone else wears and it usually is Mum! But if you are a Partner/Dads etc this advice still applies! Pick something that you feel amazing in, that is comfortable, makes you feel good and that you won't want to change your mind for something else at the last minute. If you feel great, your images will look great because you are relaxed and wearing something that you love. THEN dress the rest of the family.
  2. The options are endless, but ultimately you want something that reflects who you are, who your kids are at that age. Its not much point dressing your teenager in something they hate, they wont be in a good mood before you even get to the session. Dress for comfort, style and what reflects your family style and personality.
  3. You cant go wrong if you opt for neutrals, earthy tones, browns, mustard, yellows, dusty pinks, oranges or earthy greens, creams or white clothing all look great. Think of flowing dresses or skirts for movement (mum or kids). You also cant go wrong with basics, white, denim, black - staples that never date.
  4. Add in some contrast with different textures (wool, lace, linens etc) just limit patterns, have fun with accessories, hats, scarves, boots etc can all make a big difference to the overall appearance of your gallery. (I am also all for bare foot sessions!) Pull colours from the main persons dress/shirt and go from there... Lay out all of your clothing options for everyone on the bed and then take away/add to it until you have a combination that you like - feel free to send me a few pictures and I can offer my advice too
  5. Rule #1 No big logos, slogans, large images on shirts or fluro colours, avoid brights!
  6. Rule #2 Don't mix too many patterns, generally 1 or 2 is enough (a pattern may be gingham/floral/check/swirls etc)
  7. Rule #3 Compliment each other, don't compete!
  8. Rule #4 break all the rules - if you want! Its your photo session, so if its unique to you then just go for it!

You can see some of my beautiful client choices below for inspiration. Some of my favourite shops are also linked below. If in doubt, feel free to message me for consultation, send me photos of your ideas and we can work it out together.

Newborn Sessions

A few extra steps to ensure a fuss free session:

Bring the usual: wipes/bottles/dummy and a blanket that smells of home/mum. This can be very comforting when in a new environment. Bring and outfit change (one for mum and dad too is a good idea if you have a spewy baby)... Aim to feed baby before you arrive, but don't over feed, keep your routine consistent. Stay calm - if you are running late (or early), just let me know, I am flexible! Stress free parents = stress free baby. It's no worries to feed during a session, I allow extra time, so that baby's needs come first. Any questions or concerns, just reach out!

During a session - tips and ideas to make your experience even better

  • Bring a bottle of water
  • Snacks for kids should be dry food only, preferably only given at the end of the session
  • Save lollies/treats as well as ipad/or screen time for the ride home!
  • A small toy for young children (neutral coloured if possible) think matchbox cars, a small wand or doll, even blocks or a favourite rock will work - these may feature in your gallery so choose something that is meaningful to the child and will add to the experience.
  • A change of clothes for small children or new mums
  • Music - your favourite playlist can help everyone
  • If you have any concerns or questions, just message me, I am more than happy to discuss your session experience with you.
