IWD is celebrated each year in our community – through both our local council and one of our towns biggest employers, Anglo American, Capcoal. This year they marked the day, with a breakfast on site and live streaming the companies official event, hosted in Brisbane, with the main message "Break the Bias". A showcase of inspiring stories from those who have been in the industry long term to those that are preparing to enter the industry, Anglo American provided a strong message to all women that they are continuing to create an equal opportunity workplace. A site tour was then provided for staff and local business owners who were in attendance, a highlight of the morning with a view of a working truck and electric shovel pit in action.
I was privileged to be asked to cover the event this year and enjoyed the site visit, I have previously worked in the mining industry and it was awesome to be back in that environment and see the mine at work. It is also encouraging to see major companies marking the occasion of IWD each year and ensuring our current and future skilled workers all have access to a fair and non biased workplace.
The official meaning of International Women’s Day is:
International Women’s Day (8 March) is a day for us to join voices with people around the world and shout our message for equal rights loud and clear: “Women’s rights are human rights!”
We celebrate all women, in all their diversities. We embrace their facets and intersections of faith, race, ethnicity, gender or sexual identity, or disability. We celebrate those who came before us, those who stand beside us now, and those who will come after.
It’s a time to celebrate the achievements of women, whether social, political, economic or cultural.
IWD is a day to recognise how far we’ve come towards gender equality, and also how far we have left to go.
